Monkeypox Outbreak Expands in USA and Worldwide
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced additional monkeypox virus (MPX) infections yesterday in two more states.
As of June 6, 2022, the CDC confirmed that (13) states, led by New York (7) and California (6), have recently confirmed (31) monkeypox infected patients.
The others are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wash DC.
Previously, Texas and Maryland reported monkeypox cases in 2021.
Globally, MPX outbreaks have been reported in about (36) countries and (1,071) patients as of June 7, 2022.
The unfortunate worldwide leader is the United Kingdom.
On June 6, 2022, the U.K. Health Security Agency confirmed 302 MPX patients.
Most of these cases (283) are located in the greater London area.
The CDC updated its Alert - Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions to alert international travelers of their potential risks on June 6, 2022.
People usually become infected with the MPX through contact with the skin lesions or bodily fluids of infected animals or humans (alive or dead), including respiratory droplets, or through contact with materials contaminated with the virus, says the CDC.
Monkeypox infections can be fatal in up to 11% of people.
If you are sick and could have MPX, delay travel by public transportation until you have been cleared by a healthcare professional.
The WHO recently stated, 'The situation is evolving rapidly.'
'The WHO expects that there will be more cases identified as surveillance expands in non-endemic countries and in countries known to be endemic who have not recently been reporting cases.'
The WHO says anyone infected with MPX should be isolated for 21-days.
In addition, the WHO says any patient with suspected monkeypox should also isolate during the presumed and known infectious periods, that is, during the prodromal and rash stages of the illness, respectively.
The Jynneos® (MVA-BN, IMVANEX) vaccine is offered to MPX patients' close contacts in many countries, including the USA.
