Thousands of Airport Screeners Needed in the USA

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it is launching recruitment efforts nationwide to fill over 6,000 Transportation Security Officer (TSO) positions by the Summer of 2021.

Based on anticipated seasonal travel trends in the months ahead and the progress of COVID-19 vaccinations for the general public, TSA has launched national efforts to recruit new employees in support of screening operations at approximately 430 airports nationwide.

“TSOs are a critical first-line defense in securing our nation’s commercial air transportation system,” commented Melanie Harvey, acting Executive Assistant Administrator for TSA’s Security Operations, in a press release issued on February 19, 2021. 

“Each day, our officers screen hundreds of thousands of airline travelers, ensuring they arrive at their destinations safely. We expect to screen a higher number of travelers regularly by the summer months and will need additional officers to support our critical mission.”

The expected increases in traveler screening are related to the U.S. CDC’s COVID-19 testing requirements.

Effective January 26, 2021, the CDC required all air passengers two years of age and over entering the United States (including U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents) to present a negative COVID-19 test, taken within three calendar days of departure​, or proof of recovery from the virus within the last 90 days.

Between January and December 31, 2020, the TSA screened approximately 324 million passengers throughout its airport security checkpoints.

As part of the ongoing “Stay Healthy. Stay Secure.” campaign, a dedicated TSA COVID-19 page is updated daily to provide information on daily travel volume, employee infections by the airport, travel tips, and general updates regarding TSA operations.

Targeted recruitment, virtual job fairs, and opportunities in dozens of cities have already been announced for individuals seeking part-time and full-time opportunities. Benefits include access to medical coverage, vacation, and sick leave, and retirement plans.
