24 Additional Pediatric Liver Inflammation Cases Confirmed This Week
The U.S. CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases reported today that the number of persons under investigation (PUI) for Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Etiology had reached 320.
The CDC's data published on June 30, 2022, shows an increase of (24) pediatric cases this week.
The CDC and local health agencies have looked broadly at hepatitis cases of unknown origin in children under ten years of age since October 2021.
'While rare, children can still have serious hepatitis, and we don't always know the cause. That's why investigators continue to look at possible causes and investigate,' says the CDC.
This information indicates the total number of children impacted with acute liver inflammation issues may go up or down as more medical charts are reviewed.
As of June 24, 2022, the WHO/PAHO confirmed at least 920 probable cases in 33 countries.
Of the probable cases, 5% of children have required transplants, and 2% were reported as a related fatality.
Based on the working case definition for probable cases, laboratory testing has excluded hepatitis A-E viruses in these children.
Of the pediatric patients with data regarding COVID-19 vaccination status, about 85% were unvaccinated.
